Courthouse Catania

2020 Catania | Competition courthouse | Municipality of Catania

  • The project offers the opportunity to write a new history of contemporary judicial construction by tackling the ambitious goal of translating the role of Justice into Architecture through the skilful use of light, materials and the relationship with the particular genius loci of this fragment of the city of Catania. The Italian courts impose themselves in the city for the recognisability and authority typical of the architecture of the 1930s which made monumentality its own symbol.

The design process led to the definition of a composition of compact volumes of different sizes, governed by the balance between solids and voids. This choice is consequent to the desire to establish a close correlation with the urban context, generate the most efficient programmatic functionality, introduce natural light into the work spaces and give outward visibility to all work spaces.

The relationship with the place takes place on several fronts, on one side the city and on the other the sea. The building performs the function of a 'via', a transparent limit between the community and the landscape.
