Refuge Graffer

2024 Madonna di Campiglio (TN) | Grostè refuge expansion competition | SAT Società Alpinisti Tridentini

  • The expansion project is identified in the articulation of three wooden volumes of different heights, like the alternating profile of the mountain peaks that surround it, in a sober but decisive act of composition in the distinction of the pre-existing and newly built parts. In this way, the creation of new spaces and volumes allows the existing building to be enhanced in its relationship with the context by redeveloping its different flows and functions.

The new volumes affect the building on three sides, acting as protection and structural support elements in order to obtain a general rebalancing of the overall volume. These new construction elements will be characterized and unified from a visual point of view by a covering of reclaimed fir boards with a dark tone due to the effect of time and solar radiation. The choice of the external cladding in recycled fir boards enhances the reuse of a material present locally in the area. The aim is to reduce the costs of supplying materials without giving up the strong personality of aged wood, which combines structural resistance with the fascination for the imperfection that time has generated.
